The red breast sunfish is easily identifiable by it long black gill flap. Found in many rivers and some ponds and lakes it feeds on the usual worms and insect larvae. The red breast only grows to a pound or less but it has a reputation as a scrappy fighter.
Earth worms on small size #8 or #6 hooks are a good bait choice for this fish. Appropriate artificial lures include small spinners, small twirl tail jigs, flies and small poppers.
