Campfire coffee

  1. For each cup (8 oz) of water add a heaping tablespoon of ground coffee to a canteen cup or a cooking pot .
  2. For each cup (8 oz) of water add a heaping tablespoon of ground coffee to a canteen cup or a cooking pot .
  3. Heat the mixture quickly in a stove or campfire it begins to boil briskly.
  4. Remove the from the heat and let cool for 5 min.
  5. Reheat the coffee and remove it from the heat once again when it begins to boil. This should cause the coffee grounds to settle to the bottom of the pot
  6. Decant carefully into cups.

Bread Twists

1/2 cup flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon shortening
1/8 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup water

Peel the bark off a of a non toxic non resinous wood such as maple, tulip poplar or sycamore. Set it aside.
Mix the dry ingredients and work in shortening.
Add water to the mixture until you have a stiff dough.
Form the dough into a strip of about two inches wide and 1/2 thick.
Wrap the strip of dough around the stick leaving space between the coils to allow the bread to expand.
Hold the stick above a bed of hot coals rotating it frequently until the bread is uniformly light brown. Note: Dry ingredients can be mixed beforehand or biscuit mix can be used in place of the first four ingredients.

Bannock Bread

1 cups flour
1 tsp baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon sugar
3/4 cup of water
Mix dry ingredients and stir in enough water to make a pourable batter that is smooth. Pour into large greased frying pan and set on hot coals. When the bottom of the bannock is brown, flip it. If a wooden toothpick or sliver of wood is stuck in the middle and it come out clean, then it is ready.

Cooking Rice

Add 2 cups of water to a pot for every cup of uncooked rice to be made.
Bring the water to a boil and then add the rice. Cover pot and simmer until water is completely absorbed.

Corned Beef Hash

1 twelve ounce can of corned beef
4 large potatoes
1 large onion or 1 Tablespoon of Onion Powder
salt and pepper

  1. Peel and cut potatoes into large pieces
  2. Boil potatoes until soft
  3. Dice potatoes and onions
  4. Mix potatoes, onions and corned beef together
  5. Melt butter in a frying pan
  6. Add mixture to pan and fry until brown
  7. Add salt and pepper to taste

Hush Puppies from Dry mix

1 cup corn meal
1 tbsp onion powder
1 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
3/4 cup of milk
1/4 cup of water.

  1. Form into balls or cylinders of about 1 inch diameter.
  2. Cook in hot fat or oil until golden brown.
