Ghost Crab

Ocypode quadrata

Small and elusive the ghost crabs coloration camouflages it quite effectively against the beach sand. Growing to 2 inches, it is a land dwelling crab, which cannot survive longterm immersion in water.

Although they are generally nocturnal, ghost crabs are sometimes seen at dawn or dusk or in particulary overcast conditions. Their holes which may go down as deep as four feet can be seen on the beaches above the water line and even into the dunes. Scavengers, they feed on debris cast on shore by the waves.
